Audio–Visual Piece Absence, NIME, Mexico City

Solo audio–visual piece Absence played at the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), Mexico City.

Absence evokes several notions of absence: Absence of light, absence of love, absence of humanity, when societies and all human artefacts will be destructured to gradually disappear within the materials and textures of the natural world, which, by themselves, will eventually dissolve back into primordial cosmic dust.

The piece starts with the images of crepuscular cities, the buildings mere shadows, before evolving towards images of cities in ruins, warning of impeding and very possible catastrophies for humankind, to which sounds are played that evoke emptiness and desolation. These elements gradually dissolve into the basic textures of natural materials of stone, sand, water, wood, with the sounds exploring different sensations of materiality through roughness and textures.

This path through different sentiments of absence is evoked in sound and images by a journey through intertwined corpora of sounds and images, linked by their cross-modal aesthetic properties of colour, texture, timbre, played via dynamic gestural control.

Solo concert I am speaking into a microphone, TENOR Conference 2022, Marseille

Premiere of the piece I am speaking into a microphone, 2019, at the 7th International Conference on Technologies for Music Notation and Representation (TENOR)

This piece puts forward a less common form of real-time composition: the automatic analysis of live sound from the speaking voice. However, the transformation of the voice into musical material and structure does not happen in the instant (like with beat boxing or voice- controlled synthesis), but is projected into time and space, in that the voice’s constituent sound particles are sequenced so much slower than they have been spoken such as to generate a rhythmic and spatial score.

Reading Wolfson with Denis Lavant, festival Semaine du Bizarre, theatre Berthelot, Montreuil

Photo © Luc Valigny

Reading by actor Denis Lavant with live music by Diemo Schwarz, adaptation by Anne Ropers.

Read the rest of this entry »

Solo Solo #9 with Diemo Schwarz, Claude Parle, Tiasci, Paris

Two solo permormances at cozy Tiasci with its delicious indian-inspired buffet and fabulous Ti-Punchs by Pascal Golem.

Inner Space by Christian Delecluse, DA-Fest, Sofia, Bulgaria

The light and sound installation Inner Space offers viewers a dual experience that questions the process of how we build our perceptions. First, viewers are welcomed to contemplate a dynamic room where beams of light move in sync with sound, constantly shifting the intensity of the space and allowing the viewer to be carried away into a hypnotic trance. The piece offers a behind-the-scenes look where viewers observe the mechanical aspects of the project, with its low-tech counterweight mechanism and rough structural reinforcements. The spatial changes proposed by the installation occur randomly in real time, producing a succession of contrasting perceptions, switching between order and disorder, between determinism and chance, between mind control and letting go. Second ONCEIM recording: Gruidés by Stephen O’Malley

Second recording by ONCEIM of Stephen O’Malley’s piece Gruidés out on beautiful blue vinyl on Demdike Stare’s DDS label:

A technically demanding and richly rewarding longform drone piece intently focussed on harmonic experimentation and overtone study, yielding a gloaming spectra of eliding dissonance rent in sliding tone clusters and lucent geometries punctuated by whipcrack percussion.

First ONCEIM recording: Morph by Bertrand Denzler

First recording by ONCEIM of Bertrand Denzler’s piece Morph on Confront Recordings collectors series ccs 37 was out in February:
Morph is based on the same principle as “Horns 1.2” (CCS 38). It’s a “pseudo-drone” piece, the overall sound of the ensemble or orchestra being structured by the decisions the musicians have to take in order to keep this sound alive while moving in a small, pre-established musical perimeter.
